Find out what oil type you can use for the Predator 2000 so you can get the most out of this inverter generator as long as possible.

Harbor Freight keeps their oil type guidelines relatively simple and only recommends SAE 10W-30 oil in their Predator 2000 Generator for general use.

It is typically smart to stick to this recommendation for reasons like warranty voids.

At the same time, it might be helpful to know that other generator brands often mention other oil types like SAE 5W-30 oil and/or SAE 30 oil for certain temperature ranges.

It is also worth noting that Harbor Freight recommends breaking in the Predator 2000 with petroleum-based oil.

After that, synthetic oil is an option too.

These things aside, the oil capacity of the Predator 2000 is 13 fluid ounces which is about 0.39 liters.

Lastly, Harbor Freight recommends changing the engine oil after the break-in period of 30 hours of use and every 6 months or 100 hours of use (whatever comes first) after that.

Can you use synthetic oil in a Predator 2000?

Some generator brands like Generac recommend you only use petroleum-based oils for the break-in period so you may wonder whether this applies to Predator 2000 generators too.

Harbor Freight does not seem to mention about this in their user manuals, sales pages, or FAQ page.

However, the customer support associate who answered my query said that it is recommended to break in the Predator 2000 generator with petroleum-based oils too.

After that, you can use synthetic oil too.

Harbor Freight recommends changing the oil of the Predator 2000 generator after the break-in period of the first 30 hours of use.

How to change the oil of the Predator 2000 Generator

Actually changing the oil of the Predator 2000 Generator can feel like a confusing task the first few times you do it.

Changing the oil of a generator is typically easier after operation.

However, as Harbor Freight notes, the oil does get very hot. You may want to wait a few minutes anyway.

That aside, take the following steps to change the oil of the Predator 2000 Generator:

  1. Make sure the generator has stopped and put it on a level surface that is slightly elevated.
  2. Close the vent on the gas cap.
  3. Put an oil drain pan next to the Predator 2000 Generator on the side of the oil fill plug.
  4. Remove the access panel on the side of the Predator 2000.
  5. Clean the top of the oil fill plug and the area around it.
  6. Take the oil fill plug out by turning it counterclockwise.
  7. Tilt the Predator 2000 Generator sideways toward the oil fill plug so the oil drains into the pan.
  8. Put the Predator 2000 Generator straight up again.
  9. Add the recommended oil type in the recommended amount.
  10. Put the oil fill plug back in the generator.
  11. Attach the access panel again.
